Concept maps are a great way to visually organize information for students. Using a graphic organizer allows students to think about the concept in several ways. Using concept maps in a classroom is a great way to reach visual learners. I am a visual learner, so having something to look at as I learn new concepts helps me to process new information more quickly. I really enjoyed creating this concept map, and I will definitely use this in my classroom. Teachers that teach using thematic units would greatly benefit from using the software Kidspiration. This software is full of ideas to make creative maps. If pictures cannot be found in the pre-loaded icons, then images from the internet can even be inserted onto the map. When introducing a new concept, it would be great to post the map on the smart board and print a copy out for each student. They could follow right along and even make notes on the page. It would also be a great tool for students to use to create their own map. The concept map would also be good resource to send home to parents. This would make them aware of what is going on in the classroom that particular week and could even allow them to assist their child at home with the work being done in the classroom.
Concept maps fall under the NETS-T standard:
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and
Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter,
teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance
student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual
environments.
a. Promote, support, and
model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving
authentic problems using digital tools and resources
c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal
and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and
creative processes
d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in
learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual
environments
Creating concept maps would be a great way for teachers to engage and encourage student learning and creativity. Assigning them a topic and having them complete a concept map would be a great way to challenge them to think, research, and creatively display their knowledge.
